You know that most points in doubles are won at the net. When you are at the net how do you know when to move in and be more aggressive? Or how do you know when to poach?
I saw this really short but simple video that I think does an excellent job of answering that question. Take a look and then leave a brief comment to let me know what you think.

After our first match, top on my list of skills to work on is the serve. I saw some great serves but overall here is what I observed.
As I was looking for ways to help this week during practice I found a basic video that would be good for all players to review. A few reasonable goals for this season would be:
Thank you again for your time tonight. A few followup items as promised:
I have been asked a few times about what to do with tennis gear during school hours? There are large lockers (they fit 2-3 tennis bags) available for a $10 deposit through the athletic office. Students should not leave their bag in the office or hallways.

WEEKEND ASSIGNMENT - Because we did not have a Saturday practice I asked for 1 hour of SOLID, INTENSE practice sometime before Tuesday. Focus on MOVEMENT, CONSISTENCY, SERVES & VOLLEYS. I told the guys about a website that is extremely helpful. I continue to learn about tennis from the short but extremely helpful videos. 2 ways to access: fuzzyyellowballs.com or you can access the videos on YouTube (see an example below). I've also included links for some of the best beginner courses below. Oh yeah. I also said they get a gift card for completing one of the courses and sharing with the team what they learned. So fun. Hello JV TENNIS PARENTS (and team)!
My name is Tim Vandlen (or TV) and it is an HONOR to coach your son this year. I am a first year JV coach but a life-long tennis fanatic including playing at the HS Varsity and Collegiate level. I continue to compete and learn this fantastic sport still today. Last year I was able to work with our wonderful varsity coach Tim Morey and help coach middle school. I am excited to share my passion and help your kids progress this year in JV tennis. THANK YOU for your participation this week and for your commitment this season. We couldn’t do this without great parent support. I look forward to partnering with you in developing your kids in athletics and life. |
Coach TVTim Vandlen played tennis in high school and college. He has coached tennis at the middle school & JV level and would label himself as a TENNIS FANATIC. He has worked with kids & families at Blythefield Hills Baptist Church for 20 years. Archives
